If live is cheaper, prekill it before feeding. Don't need to force live on him if he's afraid of it. And he will only be more afraid if when he's older if a rat/mouse injures him via bite.
Mine gets both cooked and raw eggs. Cooked/boiled quail eggs because that's the only way I can find them and raw and/or cooked chicken eggs depending on what's more convenient. Eggs are fed sparingly so I don't think it honestly matters whether it's cooked or raw.
In my opinion, the basking spot should be 100-120F. My tegu prefers to bask at 120 if available. You can up the basking spot temp by raising the basking platform.
My tegu is a huge jerk. Both of my tegus were/are. Trust me, I know how you feel. My Arg. BW will thrash, whip, bite, gator roll.
I've adopted a completely hands off relationship. He doesn't come out for bathing or eating. His enclosure is high enough humidity that he doesn't need a bath and he...
And just for some extra info. his basking area ranges from 115 to 125F. Ambient temperature is in the mid-low 80s. Humidity 60-75%. His substrate is soil, sand, and eco earth. He eats rats, mice, chicks, sardines, crickets, earthworms, tomato worms, whole ground carcasses w/ bones and organs...
I agree. He's got such neat leg and tail markings. He's so cute (but a jerk). lol
Here are some more from today. He got quail eggs as treats (I can only find them boiled, bleh)
He also ate some dandelion and night crawlers.
Here is Jaeger in the past couple weeks. He's got a really good feeding response now (jumping for food on tongs) but still hates me. I can't handle him without him whipping or thrashing. I've stopped handling him completely and working on building trust and letting him come to me (I've started...
He's currently in a 3.5ft long tank with a sealed wooden lid (to keep in humidity). I've covered the sides and back so he can feel more secure. He also has deep soil/sand mixture to burrow in.
In a couple weeks his adult enclosure will be finished so he'll be going into that.
Mine is mean. He thrashes, whips and hisses if my hands go anywhere near him. He also rarely eats if I'm in the room. It's kind of discouraging. I think I'm just destined to never have a nice tegu.
The other day he caught my finger and bit through my nail causing it to bleed.
