Creating a bond with my tegu

Hey I am just curious and was wondering if any tegu veterans can give me tips to build a stronger bond with my tegu, I believe I am doing well but I brought him outside two times, the first time without a harness and I almost lost him and then the second time with a harness and he tried to run. He was arching his back to look bigger and when I finally was able to grab him he swung and bite me on my arm. Here is a photo of the bite wound

Many lizards and snakes have a tendacy to "go wild" when exposed to the outdoors. It takes them minutes to forget they were ever in captivity. Instinct takes over.
