Here is the ad of of someone selling a colombian as an argentine.
The company is exotic pets las vegas

Now PuffDragon wrote them telling them it was not an argentine tegu and this is the response they gave him

Actually it's an Argentine. And a good price to boot. Don't know much about tegus, do ya? Tell you what, buy it from me, and if it's not exactly what I say it is I'll double your money back. I'm not in the business of ripping people off, or being insulted.

So after seeing this and talking to puff, I decided to email them myself with the following

Subj: Argentine tegu
Date: 12/30/2007 12:55:52 PM Pacific Standard Time
From: Ameivaboy
To: ExoticPets LV

Hello,

The tegu you have listed on Kingsnake is not an argentine tegu (Tupinambis merinae) it is in fact a colombian tegu (Tupinambis teguixin). I am not mistaken in what I am telling you as I work with both species.
(Since an email reply of yours to a fellow tegu keeper was demeaning to say the least.) If you do not fix your ad I will put your company up on fauna's BOI for misrepresentation and on several tegu sites on the internet so people will know that thjis animal is not an argentine tegu.

Please take the time to review these pictures.

Argentine tegu Tupinambis merinae

Colombian tegu

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://s60.photobucket.com/albums/h8/Ameivaboy/Tupinambis/?action=view&current=DSC01884.jpg">http://s60.photobucket.com/albums/h8/Am ... C01884.jpg</a><!-- m -->

Just for quick comparison here is the animal on your ad

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://market.kingsnake.com/image/734082.jpg">http://market.kingsnake.com/image/734082.jpg</a><!-- m -->

Which does it look like to you?

Now if you can not see the difference between the 2 (or the simlarity of your pictured animal to my teguixin) then you should not be selling tegus.

So there it is. Hopefully they change their ad and are more honest in future dealings. I will update this when they respond to me.

Good job, I have seen a few of them on there in the last few months. Good looking out!

If you or anyone else see's similar things please post them here
that way we can let other tegu keepers know (and expose the sellers on other venues such as the BOI)

That seller has been caught before misrepresenting animals, it is wrong to do so, he will now be called on his actions.

Ken emailed me this morning.

Well, I do stand corrected. My guys did indeed pull the wrong tegu. I just left a list of animals to photograph, and did not look closely enough at the thumbnail before I posted the ad. I have so many ads that I rarely take the time to actually look at the ad after I post it. I guess I better take more time to check out the details. I think the fact that when they took the tegu out of the cage, and it was so very docile and had rough skin, much more textured then what we are used to for a Columbian it fooled them. I do breed Argentine tegus, and we should have caught the difference before posting the ad. Embarassing, but not the worst thing that has ever happened lol. Take care

Thanks,
Ken

I do appreciate the email, and was suprised he hadnt posted on fauna and responded to me directly first. I do sort of beleive what he says about the thumbnails as I grabbed a crappy thumbnail of my argentine to send to him as well :?
I'm just happy this is seemingly resolved for now. I wonder if he'll put up an ad for an actual argentine tegu now???

wow thats amazing. this isnt the first stunt they have pulled. i watch the ks lizard and the monitor/tegu classifieds regularly and i have noticed several of thier scams. if it isnt extremely over priced, its usually the wrong reptile. for example they have several baby rock iguanas for sale, but no clue as to what species they are. they change the names back and forth every few weeks. one week they called them cuban rock x rhino iguana babies, then they call them cuban rock iguanas, and then later they call them cayman hybrid rock iguanas.
