I'm also a COS local. Good to see other herp lovers out there. My new cage is nearing completion and should be finished by this Friday.
How large are your Tegus? If they're still babies I have a large glass tank that I used as a temp for my tegu when she was a hatchling.
When I first got mine he was really crazy like that. I am sure there are many methods and ways, but I just grabbed mine and put him in my lap while I was watching TV. Once he was out of the cage he was a lot more docile. It might have been a little bit of shock or just being out of his habitat...
My tegu is pretty picky himself, but I've had a bit of luck with some other things:
Horned worms
Wax worms (Though they are getting a bit too small for him now, he can eat a boatload)
Salmon is possibly his favorite
pinkie and fuzzy mice
Mango
That's pretty much all he'll eat. Refuses turkey...
Temp is about 100f to 78f, humidity is normally around 65-70. He is probably around 3-4 months old, 14 inches right now. Feed him every day right now, sometimes I skip a day if he's looking fat or doesn't seem interested in food. about 6 times a week sounds right.

I've found that they really love knocking stuff over. I normally set up a series of paper towel tubes up and let my guy knock them over. He normally then shoves his snout in the tip and pushes them around for a good while.
