That's what they've always reminded me of, and I still find it funny that they are closer to monitors than to skinks.

My automatic spell checker also doesn't realize what a skink is and tried to tell me I spelled it wrong and wanted me to put slink, skunk and a few other words in its place.

I've got one!

This is Kami (short for Kamikaze)
babyalligatorlizard2.JPG

She's really young when I got that picture. These days she's much longer (about 11 inches) and I wish I knew what subspecies she is. She's from Baja, and she's got the dark lines down the middle of the belly scales, so I'm sure she's a southern. I'm just not sure what type. I've always loved the little yellow spots on her sides though.

Here's a more recent picture

She's tamed down into something wonderful. I've managed to handle her enough that she doesn't defecate or try to bite at all. She's content to just hang out on my hand or my shoulder. She also loves to sprawl out on my laptop keyboard and soak up some belly heat while she's out.

If that's the case, then she may have even more growing to do! It really amazes me just how much of them is just tail.
