Tegus may see people as objects rather than friends or acquaintances. If it smells interesting they bite it. Chickens will do the same thing. If you fell asleep with a bunch of chickens you could wake up minus your eyeballs and half your nose and lips.
I can't answer you question directly but I use the ReptiSun mercury vapor bulbs. Heat and UV all in one. Saves on energy. I replace them yearly. Just follow the guidelines on the packaging and make sure the distance to the Tegu is appropriate.
I've had great luck with ReptiLinks - they're 90% or more of my tegu's diet - but they are expensive.
No supplements necessary though - supplements actualy throw off the balance of the diet or so ReptiLinks advises.
Thick layer of cypress mulch with a slate basking site over it. Can thin out at the other end of the cage. Add water a couple times a month. Now your Tegu can dig a burrow and it will be real humid. They spend more than half their time in the burrow so no shedding problems. I'm in AZ. 10-15% RH...
My sub-adult eats every other day. ReptiLinks and occasional banana and other fruit. Temp and humidiy are very important, as is UV. Hot spot at least in the 90's, humidity high 80's in the burrow or hide, mercury vapor lamp if no exposure to direct, unfiltered sunlight.
The tub is a horse trough. The top is expanded metal made by a welder. Horse trough's are abut $300 at Tractor Supply and much lighter than most cages. Once emptied one person can move it outsdie for a hose down. Much easier to keep clean than a standard cage. The expanded metal top is covered...
I couldn't get your link to open but I use an 80 watt mercury vapor bulb about 8" up from the basking spot. I also supplement with natural sun. I'm in Arizona and don't worry about humidity. The substrate is thick cypress mulch and I keep the bottom couple of inches damp so the burrow my tegu...
Looks flawless. Husbandry seems fine. Maybe it's just a runt? Can be jsut as well if you've ever seen a giant with attitude. Only thing I can think of that might be wrong is UV source and distance from the tegu. Ever give it any natural sun through a screen?
I don't use a fogger on my tegu but I do use one on my mangrove snake. It's a Walgreens ultrasonic humidifier hooked to a lamp timer. Fogs the whole cage 4 times a day. The two cost about $40. You might need to get a few pieces of PVC from Home Depot to channel the output from the humidifier...
My somewhat unconventional solution here in AZ where the RH runs 10-15% for months is to keep my tegu in a horse trough with about a foot of cypress mulch at the deep end. Heavy slate is placed over that and the tegu digs a burrow under it. Dumping water in a couple times a month keeps the...
Many lizards and snakes have a tendacy to "go wild" when exposed to the outdoors. It takes them minutes to forget they were ever in captivity. Instinct takes over.
I could never get veggies into mine until I tried ReptiLinks which they love. Those things are expensive though. They seemed to up the growth rate some. I was doing rodents and kingworms up until then with vitamin/calcium dust on the kingworms. Lots of folk use ground turkey as a base to add...
