My Tegu would eat Crickets only too until I gave him some turkey with bones and organs ground in it. Now he wont eat anything else. He gets awful messy at time though. He likes to grab it and fling it everywhere. Such fun to watch though.
Also, just to be safe, if hes adjusting to you, dont dig him out. Its hard at first, but thats what they do. Burrowing lets them feel safe and sound. When you dig him out, he will lose trust in you because youve removed him from his safe spot. Good luck and lets see some pics of the new Tegu!
Ive heard that before. The reason I havent done this yet, however, is that he doesnt use his hide. He burrows in the substrate in random locations. He is by no means predictable.

I had kinda figured that it would take longer than three weeks for him to adjust. I just didnt expect...
Howdy again folks. I have a few questions.
1) It has been 3 and a half weeks since I got Cinder home. I was able to hold him quite a bit at first. Now he runs from me and I cant even pet him. He never huffs, bites, or whips. Just hauls tail when i get close. I put my hand in the cage...
Yea, Im learning to respect his timeline. I just worry that if I am not able to handle him but once a week that it will be arder to earn his trust and tame him. The coll thing is I can look under the tank stand and see where hes dug in. I see his feet on the bottom of the glass where he digs...
Hey all. Just thought Id check in and see whats going on. So after one week in the house, Cinder decided to come out when I was home.
After he ran from my hand a few times into his hide, he finally let me pick him up.. I got to love on him for about a half hour before i had to leave for an...
Ive had my new Tegu for a week and he still isnt coming out of his hide when Im at home. He usually comes out right after I go to work and there is no way to coax him out when I return. SO I just say his name a few times every day when i get home trying to get him used to my voice/presence.
I likely will at one point but two things stand in my way. My soon to be wife is already apprehensive about a 5 foot lizard roaming the house. I dont know what shed think about two.
THe second, and more important, is that I want to make sure I get his care down totally and learn to tame...
Yessssss:D
Thanks for the help guys. I found a butcher shop about 10 minutes from my house that sells ground turkey with the bones. Theyre going to order me some rabbit too. Hare today has some good stuff but if I can avoid the shipping that would be better. More money to spend on...
So instead of using ground turkey, I should buy some turkey on the bone and grind it up? I am using a calcium supp in his ground turkey now. In regards to the light, does it matter which 12 hours of the day hes getting the heat? Thanks for the reply.
I have a few questions about my new baby tegu. I was told by the pet shop to keep his infrared and his uvb light on 24 hours. However, he pretty much stays buried 22 hours a day. Is this because hes hot and wants to stay cool? Or is it because hes new and scared of me still? Hes never out...
Good morning. My name is curtis and I just bought my baby tegu thus weekend. Hes a b and w colombian named cinder. Its my first tegu do I'm picking things up as I go. I've done my research and feel like I've got a good handle on his care but I have to say it drives me crazy not being able to...
