Sounds like it's going well. Eventually you'll have to face it and go closer to his head - how large is he? If things keep going smoothly, I think you should have little to no problems holding him apart from the fact that he may be squirmy in your hands the first few times. Also, he may be terrified of the bath, given time he will get used to it.

Mind posting some pics? I'll check to see if you already have.
