My guys seem to only notice me if I make a sound. They are a bit startled at that point.

bad eye sight?

They know you are there if you make a loud noise they will get startled. If they are not looking at you the are proabably ignoring you. You look like a huge predator to them that takes quite a bit of time for that to go away. When you go in their enclsoure they think you are going to eat them. That is why attempting to handle them when they are still afraid of you will destroy any trust you have built.
