Was it ocean beach or lake beach?

Ocean driftwood is best. The salt water better 'cures' the wood for long lasting durability. Also salt water parasites will not survive in a freshwater environment. Not to mention water bound parasites will not survive out of water. Thus making "purifying" the would even less necessary.

Second best type of driftwood is stuff that has been burried in marsh muck for a long time (sealed away from oxygen).
