Cats are naturally curious and he's probably attracted by your GU's movements. Unless the cat gets some respect/fear for the GU this behavior will likely continue. You have 4 alternatives as far as I can figure:

1) get rid of the cat
2) get rid of the tegu
3) keep the separated(barriers)
4) train the cat to stay away(super soaker)
