Hi all
I'm someone who is currently interested in getting a tegu as a pet to love (specifically a male, Black and White Argentinian Tegu). I joined this forum in the hopes that I can get some help getting a tegu and raising one up for hopefully more than 2 decades. But because of my situation that I'll explain below, I may have an extremely hard time to do both, so I hope you don't mind helping me. ^^;
Before I continue I think I should inform people that I'm not really familiar with forums, so forgive me if I do something that's not supposed to be done (like posting a thread on a wrong place, not knowing something I should know etc.). I will say sorry in advance if I do commit something silly, and will hope that this forum will rectify any mistakes I make so I can avoid doing them in the future. Though trust me I wont do anything that goes against forum rules.
Anyways, sorry if this is going to be a long thread. As I said above I want to own and take care of a tegu, but unlike most of the people here in these forums (who I assume are from America), I'm actually WAY over here in the Philippines. I've tried searching for a tegu here in the Philippines but I've had absolutely no luck finding one. No one I asked even knew what a tegu is. So my first problem is pretty much finding a way how to get a tegu without really hurting my wallet, as I have no choice but to buy one from another country and have it shipped here. I have cousins in Australia that may or may not come here and I asked them if there are any tegus for sale in Australia, so they can just buy and ship/bring one here, and Ill pay them in a later date. I was wondering what you people think and could recommend in this certain situation? I'm definitely aware that there are plenty of places and people to get tegus from there in America, but I'm not even sure if they'll agree shipping the poor thing halfway across the world, and if they do I'll be worried for the tegu's wellbeing, being in a box then sent in an airplane and all that. XD Not to mention my family is SO cautious with purchasing things online/from another country, since there are a lot of people who offer scams and such. Yeah, I know, they're too cautious but I understand them. Also, as much as possible I was hoping I could start with a very young tegu (probably a week or so after hatching) so I was wondering if you people may help me by linking good threads or web pages on how to take care of young tegus, including their enclosures? I've seen some on the web when I was researching and I saw that it's actually good to vary their diets and one of what they eat are worms... which is going to be VERY difficult for me as I have a small level of scoleciphobia. ^^; I can ask another person to do it but I was wondering what alternatives you guys can suggest since I think the tegu might not get as much worms in their diet as other tegus. Mice are off his diet too, cant bear the sight of them dying. ^^; Oh and about their enclosures... my mother has a lot of misconceptions with tegus, she thinks that they will make the house smell like a zoo and will poop everywhere and insists that the enclosure be outside. I'll correct her someday, sure, but currently I have no choice but to put the enclosure outside. I've read that tegus are master escape artists and I was wondering what people can tell me if I have my tegu outside, and any measures to prevent escape is VERY much welcome. If it's still young, my mom MAY OR MAY NOT allow me to use my uncle's currently unused aquarium and put it indoors until he's older and moved outside. Something I can say that may help is that here in the Philippines, it is EXTREMELY hot; I swear it's hell on earth. XD Temperatures range from around 27C to 30ishC with the coolest being 22C (not sure if that's nighttime, though it probably is). It's also tropical which is (I hope) rather close to b&w argentenian tegus natural habitats. so I was wondering how "modified" the enclosure would be and how would you recommend the lighting to be and when I should open them? Oh, and when it comes to petting, taming, and getting its trust, how should I approach a tegu if it's still unfamiliar with me and the world? What warning signs or aggressive signs should I look out for and what usually triggers them?
That's pretty much it for now at least. The next posts of inquiry I have will be in the general discussion or on their appropriate places. And please take note that several things readily available to you Americans might not be available to me, for example, turkey is VERY expensive here in the Philippines and I am completely unsure if Cyprus Mulch exists in my country, let alone sold. I'll tell people when I don't have access to something.
Anyways, I hope I can get a tegu soon and thanks for reading up to this far.
