Saw that some other people had threads for their individual tegus.. so I thought I would start one for mine!
How I acquired Itza:
I've wanted to get an argentine since 2 to 3 years ago upon meeting my friend's free-roaming 'gu, which lived with her in her small studio apartment, and had basking spots in the bathroom. I fell in love with argentines, then, and vowed to get one of my own someday. In December, on the 21st (when the world was supposed to end!), a crazed customer called up Petco (which my friend is an assistant manager at) screaming that she hated hated hated the tegu she got her son and wanted it GONE. Was threatening to toss it out the window and such ridiculousness. So, I ended up taking the tegu in. I was VERY WARY because I was told that Colombian gus are more likely to get aggressive without constant handling, and this woman said that it bit a lot and was generally the spawn of satan. Ok. So she leaves it at the pet store, I went to go check him out................. she's a SWEETIE. Totally docile. Was very underweight and malnourished though. (no UVB, low heat, v low humidity, was fed on a diet of mealworms and superworms... woman claimed she is a year and a half, but the gu is very tiny) And the end of her tail was fried (the tip finally fell off about 3 weeks ago) AND she had a belly burn - the woman had a rock heater in with the poor baby. But all is healed and she is in perfect health, now.
So now I have my Itza! Named after Chichen Itza, the name of the pre-Colombian city built by the Mayans (hence the ending of the mayan calendar of 2012). It was meant to be! Now I'm hooked, and definitely getting an Argentine Tegu this summer! (or a blue, not fully decided yet)
