Another day, another inanely pointless thread by me.
Anyway, the other day I was considering the possibility of putting live plants in the future tegu's enclosure. Yesterday I bought a "Balloon Cactus" (Notocactus magnificus) just for the hell of it (Don't worry, I put far more thought into the tegu than I did into the cactus) and maybe later I plan on getting a Nepenthes ampullaria (tropical pitcher plant that produces squat little traps).
Can tegus be placed in an enclosure with live plants such as these? When they're little, is there a risk that it will hurt itself on the cactus or get eaten by the pitcher? Or when its larger it will tear the plants apart? The plants would be in the own pots so substrate won't be an important issue. They'd also be watered separately. Yes I know cacti and CP's have very different water requirements.
The cactus has short, bristly spines that are very weak, more like annoying hair than anything else. Save for watering both plants seem to have very similar requirements to each other and the tegu, except when the tegu goes into hibernation. The cacti will do fine in hibernation conditions but the pitcher plant will probably need to be moved.
The following pictures are not mine:
As always, thank you all for your input.
