Sad news about our newly arrived female yearling chacoan :-(

Hi everyone, after a long anticipation for our new arrival, she unfortunately didn't survive the journey to her new home.

I'm not sure what happened, but once we opened the box and brought her out of her bag she was deceased and rigormortis had set in. She was very warm but I'm thinking she may have suffocated. I feel awful for her and what she must have endured during shipping.

I'm just so sad.

Very warm is not normal and suffocation is probably not it.
Who shipped the tegu to you?
It sounds like the person you bought it from, didn't set the heat packs up right in the box and your tegu overheated.
Are you being compensated for the price you paid?

I am truly sorry for your loss, it's terrible to see animals die in the process of being shipped - in most cases, it is the fault of the seller/shipper. My condolences, and I hope you find yourself a new tegu in due time.

Thank you for your condolences.

Out of respect for the breeder I cannot state who shipped her.

Would it make a difference that a couple of t-shirts were also packed in the box? This was a very terrible incident and I still would like another tegu but now I'm afraid of the outcome of shipping? I do not want another animal to go through what this little one went through.

I'm waiting on the breeder to process everything and then contact me. The breeder was just as upset as we were. Sad for every one. :-(

I understand your wanting to keep the name secret, no problem.

Was the tegu shipped one-day overnight express? And which provider (FedEx, etc.). It seems as though the shipper was inexperienced in the matter and that's what put the tegu out, there is really no need for T-shirts as the best packing material is usually consisting of styrofoam walls within the box, newspaper, the pillow case or something of the sort the animal is in, and one heat pack attached properly.

Shipping usually goes down quite smoothly if done by reputable and knowledgeable breeder. In your next go around, I wouldn't worry too much about the outcomes - just order from Ty Park or Johnny LaRocca or someone like that. I can give you a list of breeders if you'd like.

Yes, it was overnight express. I don't believe the shipping company was the problem. The tegu was packed correctly with a heating pack attached, styrofoam, and she was put in her bag. I think it may have been the t-shirts put in at the top of the packing that may have contributed to this outcome.

I'm waiting to see what the outcome is with the breeder. I will know more on Saturday.
