When I get my Savannah I was planning on taking him to a reptile vet to have a checkup just to make sure he had no parasites. I know this would stress him out though. How long should I let him settle before I take him in?
Do you have an experienced reptile vet that can help. A lot of vets end up hurting more than helping. Just set him up right and everything will be fine.
As long as it's not sick and just needs basic stuff like check ups, fecals, or nail trims any Vet can do it. No need to wait, you can go from the shop or where ever you get it from straight to the Vet. Or wait, either way it doesn't matter.
Savs will have parasites. As long as they have the proper environment they will thrive. Another thing about the vet, a lot of times they will give antibiotics that will cause more harm. The most important thing is keeping/getting them hydrated.
I agree with James. Most monitors are imported and most have one sort of parasite or another. As long as you are maintaining the proper temps and the lizard is eating and growing, I wouldn't worry about it. Talk to your vet about fecal samples if you must. You might be able to collect some fresh feces and bring it in rather than making an office visit with the monitor. If you really feel you need to take the monitor in, do it right away before he settles in. Get the stress out of the way so his acclimation to his new home won't be interrupted.
Remember what James said, "..as long as they have the proper environment they will thrive". Worm / parasite med's are potentially worse than the worms.
