Tegu won’t eat in front of me

Honestly, I wouldn’t worry too much. Mine is hit and miss eating in front of me. He has a camera in his room though so sometimes I leave the food and watch him from my phone :) He just doesn’t want to eat in front of me some days. *shrug* Mine would only eat ground turkey at first. I got him...

    New and a bit nervous!

It’s going to be hard to keep humidity where it should be in a wire cage. They take time to eat regularly especially immediately after changing environments. Cute little guy!

Just got a baby savannah monitor!

You showed him. Who would think you’re stupid after that response!

Raw dog food - for Tegus

As long as there aren’t fillers, then it’s fine. This is not a staple meal though. It’s almost all water. I use premium wet dog wood to make sure my tegu stays hydrated and for variety. But it’s not an every day meal.

Just got a baby savannah monitor!

“BlepTongueSkink” posting about a savannah monitor on the tegu forums. I love it! Welcome welcome! Lots of tegu owners here that care for various other species.

My friend doesn’t know how to take care of their damned tegu and it could be in pain for it

MBD can be reversed. That’s not to say there won’t be permanent deformities, but the disease itself (body drawing calcium from bones) can be stopped and the bones can be restrengthened. Many people in this thread seem to think this tegu is beyond hope. I do not think that is the case. I’ve...

    Tail shedding tips?

Sounds like a humidity issue for sure. Give him a hide with peat moss or eco earth. Rub some coconut oil on his tail to loosen the stuck shed.

    Tail breaking off

Hard to tell from the picture how severe the issue is. My tegu has a nipped tail from another hatchling. After a few sheds the tip of the tail fell off and the end started turning brown. I soaked the end of his tail in a diluted bedadine solution for a week and it cleared right up.

My friend doesn’t know how to take care of their damned tegu and it could be in pain for it

I am willing to rescue him, but as Zyn said I’m not sure he will survive the overnight shipping. If your friend would rather do that than euthanize the poor guy feel free to get in contact with me. It clearly has severe MBD which CAN be treated and reversed. Although this guy seems to have...

    Tail shedding tips?

A humid hide will do more than any number of showers can. Sleeping in substrate that holds moisture for up to 12 hours a day is not something even daily baths can replicate. Tails normally take longer to shed. So long as there aren’t multiple body sheds before the tail sheds, I wouldn’t worry.

    New Guy

Welcome! Always awesome to see future owners preparing for this big responsibility! They are such rewarding pets if properly cared for. This site has so many resources, but feel free to ask any questions again! Many like myself are still learning (my tegu will be 1 next month), but we have some...

ah ha! i finally have a tegu!!!

Looks very young to me. A few weeks at most. No need for D3. They produce D3 from the right lighting. I would suggest a mega ray mercury bulb over a sun glow. It will ultimately need an 8 x 4 x 4 enclosure. I had no issue with a “spooked” tegu in a large cage (but I’ve never had that issue with...

    Possible problems with D3

I get paranoid about impacting fur while my tegu is still growing, so I feed mice Monday Wednesday Saturday. That gives a two day break (Thursday Friday) to clear the gut of fur. On off days I do various chicken organs and ground turkey. He gets fruit almost every day. Sometimes he eats it and...

    Possible Underbite?

Kinks in the tail + underbite makes me think he developed MBD with previous owner. Lack of humidity could cause the lips to curl up, but your description sounds more skeletal. The only way to really know is an x-ray, but those can be pricey. I would increase the frequency you feed whole prey as...

    TEGUS NOT BREEDING

Beyond the female being quite young, not every pair will mate. If you brumated them together and they didn’t mate after waking, you should separate them until the next breeding season. Get them both up in weight then brumate them together again. If still no luck, they may just not be a...
