One of our females Blues died today

That's a tough thing to deal with, Dave...I'm so sorry. She certainly didn't overheat at 80...besides, for an apparently healthy animal to 'just stop' with no symptoms, doesn't point any fingers at anyone. A necropsy is a great idea IMO....might answer the question. Perhaps, for example, a...

    Dwarf Chilean Tegu

Hey Machs70 :) Welcome to the board. A quick search on the Internet says that Maximum Reptiles has 'em for $50.00. I've never bought from them (or heard of them) so I can't speak for how they are...do your homework ;) Good Luck! GMB[attachment=0]

    advantages to owning a Chacoan?

That's easy...get a giant. The effort. the time, the food, etc are going to be the same either way, and the purchase price is the least of these...don't let that get in your way. That's just my opinion, of course...welcome to the board GMB

    Ideas on an 8ft x 8ft x 6ft outdoor enclosure

Under those conditions, firstly, I'd make sure that the enclosure is secure and escape-proof...full ceiling, floor etc. If you've got an idea where the water level might reach, then you can mount basking branches at or above that level. Like as not they're gonna use these branches all the time...

    Ideas on an 8ft x 8ft x 6ft outdoor enclosure

Firstly.....I'd bury the mesh a good foot and a half or so, under the dirt ( not under the layer of 'strate only) There are a hundred ways to 'do it right'...in the end, it comes down to personal preference. If I were putting up an outdoor enclosure that was built to be big enough for a...

    Ideas on an 8ft x 8ft x 6ft outdoor enclosure

Chicken wire itself ( " poultry mesh" ) is pretty thin, and therefore sharp. If for example, you had a poultry mesh floor buried under your substrate, it's not hard to imagine your tegu industriously digging through the 'strate and hitting the thin sharp metal and losing nails or toes. While...

    Attack Tegu

Hey TKeller :) It's good to have you here! Yep, case closed, I'd say. It's important to be mindful of how your hands smell....perhaps most especially while he's small and impressionable. Bear in mind too that the prey/feeding drive on young reptiles is frequently higher than in adults, as they...

    Ideas on an 8ft x 8ft x 6ft outdoor enclosure

I agree...square ( or rectangular) is IMO a better way to go. Metal also has the possibility of getting hot in the sun and burning your pet. I read a story once years ago about a big python that needed to be moved and it went and hid in its pond which was a large metal basin. They wound up...

    Ideas on an 8ft x 8ft x 6ft outdoor enclosure

Nice set-up jntann :) What are the dimensions? I've heard Monitor keepers suggest galvanized watering troughs measuring 10'X10' as a base...how big is yours...how high etc. I've never owned a Tegu (Yet) LOL but I have heard that they don't usually get ticks...this is thought to be in part...

    Pine?

[bYes indeed...no pine...no 'aromatics' at all. I can't speak to the neurological issues but respiratory problems will likely arise due to the fumes from the pine oil. Old dessicated pine may be acceptable for climbing logs, hides etc, but unless you've got a whole dessicated pine tree and a...

    8'x8' of outdoor fun!

Nope, nobody missed that. The perceived problem is the danger of the tegu digging down through the substrate and cutting off its toes on the poultry mesh. Chicken wire is very thin, therefore sharp...esp when it's been stretched tight over a frame. Tegus can, will and do dig, and such...

    8'x8' of outdoor fun!

Yep...that's a top-notch setting all right...but I'm scared o' that poultry netting too. An alternative might be 'aviary mesh' which is is half inch by one inch mesh with much thicker wire. If you're not planning to move it at all, another viable option is to pave the floor. At any good...

    Mouth Rot

Glad to hear you got rid of the mouth rot :) I don't know what's hot these days....the state of the art of reptile-keeping gets better every day! I haven't had a case of mouth rot in... oh, I'm gonna say 20 years or more. Back in that day, we'd just run to the drugstore and get a bottle of...

    UV for Sceleporus undulatus

Ahhh..OK...more UVA then. He actually has a gradient now...with 80ish being the basking area, down to about 73. For example, right now the temp gun says his basking area and his body are 86. The cool end of the remaining 15" is 82, 78, and finally....74 right now.Mind you the house thermostat...

    UV for Sceleporus undulatus

Thanks PuffDragon :) I appreciate the quick response. Question: re:' the only thing that's missing' Am I to understand that the 15w incandescent strip light bulb is providing UVA? ( Didn't know that) The setup is small for the moment ( 10gal) bc I may yet decide to release him come Spring. (...
