Money isn't really a concern for me, but before I get my tegu baby (or adult, I'm still undecided on that aspect), I'd like to get an estimate from some people who own these curious little guys. My own herps, a certain water dragon in particular, is a complete puppy dog around me while other people give her the heeby-jeebies. It's normal for animals furred, feathered, or scaled to be wary of people they're not familiar with, so don't be discouraged by this and just give him time and go...
I don't think having the sand in there would be a great idea, since they're not naturally found on it and I'm not sure what kind of harm it would do should he injest a little bit of it (sand's already pretty unforgiving, but play sand like that might have chemicals that could tear his stomach...
