I would like to agree with TheTeguNovice. Our tegu also had trouble eating when he came home for the first time.
I also agree that a lower temp basking spot is fine. 110 is our highest. Humidity at above 80% is critical and probably the hardest part to get right.
They can go without food for...
You may struggle to get your tegu's humidity high enough. I have a red, and they definitely need the humidity to shed well. Watch him closely for signs of retained shed on his tail, slow growth, lack of hunger, etc.
Mine loves it when they're covered in fish oil. Sounds awful to me, but bananas in fish oil is a favorite for him. He likes berries with no adaptations. Probably because we roll them on the floor and he enjoys chasing them. :) Blueberries, blackberries and raspberries are favorites. Veg we...
My Tegu is absolutely in love with oily fish. To the point that we buy cans of mackerel (packed in oil), and he'll eat anything dipped in the oil. Well, almost. Anyway, very convenient for us. Also, the mackerel comes with skin and bones, so good as a natural calcium source.
So one option is to grind / food process veggies with meat, then cook and feed together. Also works well with eggs, raw or cooked as long as the veg is small enough. Another option my red tegu loves is to cover veggies with fish oil.
Also, consider sweeter and softer veg? Mine likes sweet...
I really love your work! Do you submit your work to places like Design by Humans or Zazzle so that mortals like me can purchase them on t-shirts or hats or something? I'm pretty sure they give you a markup. :D Pretty please??
You probably have fungus gnats. These are common in any moist soil or substrate and fly paper will not end your problems since as LizardStudent says, they will be in the soil in egg and larval stages. You can bake your substrate. Baking should be at 200 degrees F for 24 hours, or until...
I've owned both and they're certainly similar in the ways that all lizards are similar. Beyond that, they tend to have similar reactions to stimuli (individuals excepted). Monitors can bond with you to the extent that they will recognize that food comes from you and avoid trying to bite you...
Not sure about vets. I recommended the petroleum jelly because that is what pediatricians recommend for babies. When they don't know if they're allergic to anything yet and they're brand spanking new, they use petroleum jelly. Shrug.
You may also want to increase your humidity. We had ours at 50 for a few months and he wasn't eating well. Then upped to 70 average and he ate like it was going out of style. Good luck.
Both wood and melamine are destroyed by water. Tegus need a high humidity environment, so while the plastic is expensive, it is also not going to rot. If you use wood, make sure you seal it very thoroughly. :) It's definitely cheaper.
You can also buy the material and make your own. To give Kages credit, the material is expensive. You can purchase here: https://www.onlinemetals.com/en/buy/plastic/0-5-hdpe-plate-seafoam-marine-board/pid/21742
They sell it as seafoam marine board. It's an extruded, air filled HDPE.
Kages does...
