    Potty Training?

I had a monitor that did that . i kept him on astro turf and put a shallow tray full of kitty liiter in the cage. after a while he started using it after a while. tegus can probably do it too but many might not. you could try.

NURSING A TEGU BACK TO HEALTH - NEED HELP/ADVICE

I had the same problem when mine was young . not enough uvb and whole prey items. I corrected it myself with natral sunlight, calcium and by feeding eggs(with the shell and small mice. that was two summers ago and my tegu's doing fine. shes around 33" long and is very active and eats well. I...

How Low Can You Go - What's the lowest temp for your Tegu?

im near central n.c. not far from Raleigh. using soil is a good idea. I use mostly cypress, but added top soil when I built the cage. another thing you could do is cover PART of the cage with clear plastic during the early spring and fall to increase the daytime temperature and insulate the cage.

How Low Can You Go - What's the lowest temp for your Tegu?

I keep mine outside too. I bring mine in below 50 degrees , but several times I left her out in the mid 40's. I keep her in all winter and put her out early april. by then she's already becoming active.

    Food Aggression

mine acted the same way. tegus learn to associate your hands with food if you cage feed. you should take him to his food rather than taking the food to him. you could have your mom feed him at night (before she goes to bed) while the tegu is sleeping. if he doesnt see her with the food he wont...

    question on brumation/ eating habits.

I think Its a good Idea to let her hybernate (because you cant stop her from doing it anyway.) if she hasnt eaten , you can reduce the temperature slowly. that will help facilitate hybernation. some people keep them warm all year, but many still slow down, sleep alot and refuse food.

    i want all the facts

I would lower the temperature a little. I keep mine outdoors from april to around october. then she sleeps from october to april.she stops feeding in september though. I keep her at 55-72 degrees. havent had any problems yet. I never dig her up. I do offer water sometimes if she comes to the...

    Enclosure Go Ahead!!!

If you get a hatchling you should be able to use the 6x4 cage for several years. if you stay in florida you should consider an outdoor enclosure. I created one by modifying a dog kennel. also if you take you tegu outside be carefull. some tegus have been known to run away.

    Dart frogs or newts?

your right, salamaders and most newts need temps in the 70's . i was reading in an amphibian book that some people keep fire salamaders in a refrigerator or other cold place during the summer and in the aquarium in the winter.(seems like alot of trouble to me) I kept a firebelly newt and several...

sorry about your loss. just try to focus on getting a new hatchling later this year. its cool that you already have a large cage for him/her.

    Taming "the beast"

Im not so sure about your tactics on taming a tegu. I prefer gentle handling ,bin feeding, and not letting the tegu see me with the food. what happens when your tame tegu is 4 feet long and he jumps at you when your holding the tongs? what happens when he jumps, misses the tongs and gets your...

    B/W Draco early hibernation

I would get rid of the undertank heat and just use overhead heat because tegus sometimes dig to escape heat. I used one before ,but it was in a large cage and it was a small heat mat.
