    Question about Tegu housing

I built my own. A prefab enclosure is thousands. My girl has insanely powerful claws so I’d be worried a grow tent would be shredded while I was at work and she’d get into trouble with the other pets. I bought discount lumber (the bent and scratched stuff for 70% off) so the whole setup was...

    DNA testing

Don’t think there is a large enough demand for that. It’s not like purebred dogs, cats, or race winning horses. Not oodles of money to be made in tegu breeding, unless you are making boots.

Poop Post, But I could use some replies

Tried a nice warm bath? My tegu likes to have a 15 to 30 min bath in warm water that goes up to her shoulders. Usually she’ll go in the bath. If not, a nice free roam walk around the house after the bath loosens her bowels for a good poo.

    What to feed

I make mine homemade meatballs of turkey, fish, fruit, and escarole. To supplement I give her a can of tiki cat high protein canned food (she LOVES that), frozen/thawed quail and rodents. Not really a “cheap” way of feeding an apex predator. You get out what you put in. You feed her quality...

Black and white tegus from $125 to $300.

    I suggest getting counseling first.

    They grow up so fast!

First picture was today, 2nd was taken Oct 25. She’s gotten a LOT bigger since the tiny 9in long flighty hatchling I adopted last August. At what size or age should I wean her back to every other day feedings? She eats heartily and aggressively still, with no inclination towards brumating...

8x4x4 enclosure ideas? wood preferred. diy stuff

I just went to the scratch & dent section of local lumberyards and got all my wood for 70% off. So my 6’ x 29” x 27” enclosure only cost me $220 to make instead of $700+. It’s not pretty, but it’s functional and my baby is loving the space. My tortoise table is on top. Lol bunkies!

    Q: Tegu defensiveness/aggression + taming?

If you continue to be a benefit to him, yeah, he’ll calm down eventually. 90% of the adult tegus I’ve ever seen are laid back and lazy. The 10% that weren’t were wild caught as teens or adults and brought to captivity, or were poorly raised and correlated humans interaction only with food or...

    Q: Tegu defensiveness/aggression + taming?

Best thing I did was get a comfortable chair, sit in it for a while, read a book, and let the tegu approach and smell me. She gets used to it, realizes you aren’t dangerous. Just work with it daily, for as long as you can. Return the tegu to the enclosure immediately if it gets spooked or shows...

    Q: Tegu defensiveness/aggression + taming?

Socialize the lizard like crazy. Don’t be a threat to it, and don’t be a pushover either. If it sees you as a care taker and a positive experience, it’ll be less inclined to bite. Tegus don’t like to bite as a first response anyway. They much prefer to bruise you with a tail clubbing or run...

    Cheap but good tegu foods?

Personally, I limit mice to no more than 30% of a captive animal’s diet, because most don’t get the exercise or the days without coming across prey that a wild animal has to deal with. I’ve seen MANY fat zoo lizards that got predominantly whole food meals. Now days, almost all zoos do the...

    Q: Tegu defensiveness/aggression + taming?

Thick leather gloves can help, but there really isn’t a 100%. effective way other than not owning pets. Even the sweetest cocker spaniel can easily nip off a finger.

    Cheap but good tegu foods?

Make the above meatballs. Thaw one, and stick live mealworms into it. The wriggling worms should produce a striking response, and once he realizes it’s food, he’ll go to town on the rest of the meatball. If he’s repeatedly not eating, a vet check for parasites or impaction could be necessary.
