Adventures of Ammy the Wonder-Lizard

So today I took some pictures of Ammy, our wonder-lizard. She's about 4 months old, healthy as can be, ornery and contrary, and convinced she can fly.

Yesturday we bought a lizard leash, so hopefully soon, she'll get to explore more. We're in the process now of getting her a larger enclosure since she's convinced she can not only fly, but has learned how to scale glass walls. She's convinced that she's a lot bigger than she is.

A few days ago, she had a beautiful shed, literally came off in one whole piece like some sort of lizard suit. My husband tossed it before I could take pictures of it, it was that perfect a shade.

She's a beautiful fat beast. She ate her first peach fuzzy two days ago, and she's eating us out of house and home with her greed. She loves her ground turkey, her big juicy crickets, her tilapia fish, her mice...pretty much anything we put in front of her.

She's got the most atrocious manners, she actually sits there and wipes her face on us when she's got something stuck to the side of her mouth. She's gotten very picky about how she eats, so we don't even try to use the tongs anymore, we just let her eat her fill and let her learn for herself what happens when you try to take in huge bites of food. It's been funny watching her try to eat more than she can handle and sit there with it hanging out of her mouth until she figures out to let it go and try a smaller bite.

I took some good pictures of her today. Her belly is fat because she just finished eating quite a few crickets, so she's fat and happy and wants to run everywhere in these pics.

The crazy man holding the lizard would be my husband. Ammy is absolutely his baby, when she is outside of her cage, she's on his shoulder, or wrapped around his neck. She is convinced that his neck is her safety-zone. I can't have her on my neck, it tickles too much, lol.

And a few questions for people. how do you trim a tegu's claws? Do you get a vet to do it, or do you attempt to do it yourself?

If she will hold still, you can do it yourself. Just be sure to only cut off the tip.

Beautiful girl! For nail trimming I let them walk around for a bit then when they decide that they are just going to sit still I trim them, if they start to move off or do something else I let them go so there's no stress. Dont hold them down and dont trim to far back and hit the quick of the nail or it will bleed. I usually do it when they are sitting still on my lap.........sometimes that takes a while.

Well, yesturday Ammy got to find out what it's like to go to the vet. We were nervous pet owners, and found out the hard way that it takes a lizard a lot longer to pass the remains of fuzzies compared to what comes out with her eating crickets and ground turkey. We thought what we had was an impaction. What we had was a gluttonous lizard with a bellyache. So after much grumbling by the lizard, she's been checked by a vet.

She's healthy, not impacted anymore. Just grouchy as hell at us, and hiding. i think the vet trip upset her a lot...she hasn't come out of her burrow since yesturday, but we've checked on her, she's fine. Just doesn't want to be bothered right now.

The vet tells us she's in beautiful health for a lizard of her size, and we're doing everything right. So we're glad.

And according to the vet, she is a she, or as much as she can tell. Ammy really didn't like getting poked there, so she was most vehement about trying to escape a physical exam.

But at least all is well. $60 later we now know that our lizard is a pig, but she's in perfect health and just needs to learn to eat less, digest more, lol.

Also, quick question. is it normal for the belly to be turning an orange color? We've noticed with her last shed that her underside has orange color in spots, and we weren't sure if tthat is supposed to happen?

The orange is normal. A lot of tegus get the orange belly.

What are your temps and humidity?
