ANOLES

Long ago I used to have anoles . I know most of you think of them a food for your snake but what is involved with raising them ?? Before I just kept them in a fish tank no heat or light and they lived a long time .. I think one even laid an egg at one time ... We have those alligator lizards up here along the Canadian border and blue tail skinks along with rubber boas .. Rubber boas are cool as they only eat pinkies and some times only eat once a year ..

Add the term "care sheet" to any species you are interested in keeping in a search engine to find sites with suggestions on care (example, use google to search: anole care sheet).

They are quite easy to care for but do note they require UVB to thrive.

Rubber Boas are very cool too. I have a young pair myself :)

Chances are the care sheets are put together by people who have real world experience...

I've kept Anoles as well as a host of other lizards, they also run wild in my area. Asking more specific questions may inspire better responses. But as for their general needs, we will just be regurgitating what is in the care sheets.

Hi Toby .Thank you for your response.. Actually I just put out some questions that I had been thinking about just to get all the advertising off the site .. There was nothing up but fifteen posts about the same thing he was trying to sell .. That being said people come on this site to ask questions Are you telling people to go to another site to find out information??? If you don`t want to answer the question why do it ?? Does it annoy you that people ask questions that they could find out on other sites so Toby dosn`t have to bothered about it ?? I`m sure you are very special and maybe only one or two people in the world come close to your great storehouse of knowledge.. But please cut us idiots a little slack ... Keep up the good work !!

Starting with care sheets is a good idea to gain some insight as to what you have in store for you. The problem is there are lots of old care sheets in dire need of an update. Some of the basics if you want your anoles to thrive..

1) large large large enclosure, the bigger the better(especially if keeping more than 1)
2) mix up a good substrate, top soil works well since it should be planted
3) lots of plants to offer cover and basking options(philodendron, bromeliad, etc)
4) basking spot around 90-95 degrees and good uva/uvb lighting throughout
5) daily mistings to water plants and this is how anoles will stay hydrated as well
6) feed gut loaded/dusted crickets other insects 2-3 times a week

In both of my posts above I offered practical advice... In neither of my posts was I in any way rude, arrogant or spiteful. Projecting such a mood onto my posts reflects your character far more than mine.

In my posts I offered a simple suggestion that answered not only this question, but gave you (or anyone) the ability to learn how to answer their own questions (give a man a fish you feed him for a day, teach him to fish you feed him for a lifetime).

When you shared you had that information already I asked you to ask specific questions so people could give you specific answers, instead of simply retelling you what the caresheets did.

I would welcome and encourage anyone to ask any question related to this site. In response I would offer the best answer I could, even if it included suggesting they utilizing other sites to gather information. Tegu Talk is a wonderful resource, but I'm not silly enough to think it's the only one ;)

Best wishes to both you and your animals.

Not certain what type of anole you are referring to but I can only assume you mean the common green anole, at least that's what comes to my mind when someone mentions the word "anole".

They run rampant here in southeast, Louisiana, extremely common, I see them everywhere, including my front and backyards.

They are pretty hardy lil critters, like to bask, diurnal and seem to wander quite a bit, so I would definitely second the big enclosure option, if you want to see them at their best.

If I were keeping them, I would set them up in something like a chameleon netting type enclosure or a large aquarium, at least a 75 gallon.

If you keep several and at least a couple of males and females, you just may get the opportunity to observe their impressive courtship displays and male's vie for dominance.

Their throat show displays are very cool.

On a sidenote we used to wear them as earrings when we were kids to freak the girls out. :grno

They are more than eager to latch onto your earlobe and hang on with your lobe in their mouths, very content to do so.

Toby,
Obviously you are well educated in the world of reptile's however, I must agree with Montana! You are a little harsh. I learned something from you just now about how to find information on care sheets. Thank you.

I started seeing the Cuban anoles down here about ten years or so ago. They are more ground dwelling and much faster than the common greens.

I happen to find them to be more impressive than the commons and also believe they don't really compete much for habitat because of the Cuban's preference to be on the ground.

I've seen both types cohabiting just fine at many different locations.
