I just went to walmart and bought a bag of cypress mulch and after a few minutes of watching him bask i saw these microscopic black things jumping up and down. he doesn't seem to be bothered but i want to know what they are and how to get rid of them.

sounds like baby fleas if they jump. could be some type of mite ,but the only mites ive seen are white and they crawl. they wont hurt your tegu but might make him/her uncomfortable. Im more worried about YOU getting a flea or other bug infestation. I would remove the tegu, wash the tegu (water only) and then blast the cage contents with plenty of water.if its a glass or plastic cage you could use 3%-5% bleech but rinse it very well.
