I want to build a new temp cage for my gu so I am not reaching in from the top and I just want to know if I could use the mesh that is used in this thread (viewtopic.php?f=59&t=102) for the front or would I have to worry about him getting his foot stuck? If so does anyone have any other sugestions cheaper then plexiglass?

Go to walmart and go to the aisle with the picture frames, get two that are big enough to use as doors. Take off the back cardboard and eoxy or silicone the glass in the frame. Attach some hinges and some locks, and you have cheap doors for like $20. Though the glass is kinda thin so it might not work. Just an idea.

A sheet of clear acrylic from Lowes or Menards is relatively inexpensive. Under $20 for a fairly good-sized piece. That's the route I'll be going when I build my next cage. I'd probably steer clear of screen or mesh of any type, as it can cause injury, as well as let a significant amount of humidity escape.
