Concerns about my tegu

Hello all. I got a baby tegu last June from a local reptile expo. He was very friendly and calm, alert and filled out as you'd expect. He ate daily and was always happy to come out and sit around.

As the weather got colder, he decided it was time for him to hibernate. He became very inactive and slept a lot, coming out of his den maybe once a week to drink and see what was going on around him.

As spring rolled around he became more active again, accepting food and generally behaving how you would expect. However, he doesn't really seem to be growing much anymore. He's roughly around 22 or so inches long, and I had thought he would be larger now. Is this something I should be concerned about?

He is currently living in a 55 gallon aquarium on cypress mulch while his larger cage is built. He's been eating ground turkey, small rodents, some fruit here and there (mainly berry-type fruits), and the canned Zoo Med foods (can o' grasshoppers, snails, and caterpillars). His basking spot ranges around 100-105 and the cooler side of his cage is in the high 80s. He gets regular vitamin dusting on his food, and has the proper uva/uvb lighting. He's still active and alert, but isn't quite as large or plump as I think he should be. Is it just me? Is it possible that he is just growling slowly?

have you had a fecal test done on him? my red tegu is 9 mo. and is only 22" long while my other 2 tegus are both 3' (one would have been over 4' but she dropped about 1' of her tail) he may have just not hit a growth spurt yet!

Tegus do grow in spurts, I would not worry too much at this point.

Okay, I just wanted to be sure it wasn't something I needed to overly worry about. Thanks for the replies!

Don't worry, your not doing anything wrong. It's normal for Tegus that hibernate or burmate ( not go all the way into hibernation and still come out every now and then like yours did ) to slow down with the growing part. Now that he is out and basking a lot more and is eating more you will see that he is going to grow fast soon. Unless you have a female. Females also grow a lot slower then the males do. I have two blue/red hybrids who are brother and sister and he is so much bigger then she is. She also hibernated one time and he didn't.
