Day Two of owning a Tegu

Hello all!

My name is Kelly, we're from Minnesota, USA. I grew up allergic to animals with fur, so I had Iguanas! My husband and I have had Bearded Dragons for years (love our dragons!!!). Yesterday, after months of research, we took home an Argentine B+W Tegu! I'm thrilled, I'm excited, and I'm nervous as a new owner. Everything he/she does I'm panicking.

Months of research is great, but doesn't give me an insight that talking to other owners does. If you could give us one piece of advice, what would it be?

Hi Kelly- Welcome and congrats on your new tegu. I also have had, well, decades of experience with iguanas. Does help in keeping a new lizard. They are very interactive like iggies and beardies.

What's his name?

OK, my one piece of advice- use tegu talk as a sounding board and source of information and ideas!!

Well, today might be name day. We just learned how to tell the gender of a baby last night, but he was already asleep!

Welcome! I too am allergic to pretty much all furry animals and I've always loved reptiles. I started off with bearded dragons (I currently have two) and I got my tegu 1.5 years ago.
All the research you did will help! Just keep your temperature and humidity in a healthy range and make sure there is A LOT of ventilation, especially as he gets older. My guy is being treated for an infection which was mainly caused by improper ventilation. I feed my guy ground turkey as a staple. I mix calcium and D3 powder, fruits, veggies, cod liver oil, and beef liver in his turkey and I keep everything varied. Let him get used to his new home so he does not get stressed. Then start to slowly handle the little guy and increase the handling over time. My little (not so little now) Mojo took almost two months to entirely get used to me. No he walks right up when he wants to be pet!
