well, i was suppose to be getting a 7.5ft cage from a guy in my area for FREE!!! BUT since i didnt call him in about a week he gave it to someone else, but the whole time i was waiting for him to call me. he was relocating his snakes who were all living in the cage(not safe but not my problem) he was suppose to call me if someone took them all, but HE DIDNT @$$WH0L3!!! so now i ha ve to make my own...i live in upstate new york and its getting very cold VERY quickly and its gonna snow soon, the cage is gonna have to be made outside so i need some help really quickly it needs to be 7.5ft by 3.5ft by 3-4ft high...thats all that i have room for and i need to know what kind of wood i should use(where should i get it would be nice also)? what do i use to seal the wood? how can i water proof it?? i dont do a lot of work with my hands so to speak aside from reptile handling...money isnt a BIG issue but lower end of the scale would be lovely, mind you i need to house 2 tegus in this for a little while in about a year or so i will be building a larger enclosure for them both to live in over that year span but this was not planned for >.< i need help before december roles around and there is at least 4-5inches of snow on the ground D= my tegu that i'm placing in there now is 3ft long snout to tip, my 2nd tegu wont be in there for quite a while but my 3ft Akira is in a 4ft enclosure now >.<

one thing to keep in mind when building a cage is the cage size you want to build wont fit through a man door so only in a garage or through a sliding glass door. iv heard many stories that people build the enclosures in the garage but dont take in consideration of door ways and hallways.

My new enclosure is being built out of pine with lexan windows...6 x 3.5 x 3.5 in two pieces so I can fit it through a door and all together its been around $500 in materials (its the labor thats priceless) use non toxic paint on the inside and you should should be good to go. hope this helps somewhat

you might want to do this. Make the cage in three different part and then be able to snap them together some how.. This way if you do have to move it again it will be a lot easier.

where in upstate do you live?

use:

1/4-1/2" plywood (pine or hard wood)
2x4's or 2x3's for the framing
Water based primer & paint
(or) water based Stain & Polyurethane
acrylic caulk to seal all joints

if using paint
(put entire cage together then caulk, prime, & paint)

if using stain
(stain & ploy everything, put every thing together, & then caulk w/ clear caulk)
