Don't get one. If you havn't had and expeirnce owning monitors your best off to not start with one of the most difficult species out there. Start off with a dwarf. It will teach you lot's about monitors. You get all the monitor attitude and punch of a big monitor but in a small managable package. I'de reconmend ackies, there grow to 2 feet and are awsome. Ill put a URL to my care sheet on them.

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://repticzone.com/caresheets/2221.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://repticzone.com/caresheets/2221.html</a><!-- m -->

Best of luck.

Go for an ackie. They have great personalities and are fairly easy to care for. Emerald tree monitors are very beautiful and extremely interesting to watch but they are difficult to care for. They are mainly display animals. Ackies you can interact with.
I used to have a black tree monitor a few years ago. He was really cool. I was thinking about getting another one but a blue tegu kinda fell in my lap. lol.
I'm much happier with the tegu.
