Feeding Time

My two dragons (Ganymede and Callisto) used to eat 3-5 large crickets per feeding. But now they only eat 1-2. Also, one started eating more, and more aggressively that the other. This role has actually changed between the two. First they both ate about the same, then Callisto started eating a lot more, and Ganymede almost stopped, now Ganymede eats more, but neither of them eat as much as they used to. Although it seems that they still eat about the same amount of lettuce. What could be the issue here, or is there a pattern that they will follow?

How old are they? Bearded dragons older than a year will go into brumation during the winter time.

I'm not too sure what their age is, I got them from Animal House. I don't think they're a year though. They are between 8" and 9"...I'll upload some pics real quick.

what kind of lettuce??? is it iceburg?

Well right now their getting a Caesar (without the light colored lettuce, I think that's the iceburg?, dressing and croutons of course) mix until I can get to the store...They usually get mostly Romaine, collard, and mustard greens.

Yea they are too young to brumate. What lighting are you using. Plus large crickets are too big for them try small crickets.

ok cuz Iceburg lettuce is like "Crack" almost nothing to it & if they start eating it they can and will stop eating just about everything else.

then the eat & eat & eat, but starve to death with a full belly

iceberg is usaly bright green and crisp

I just want to mention a thing that doesn't have to do with the topic. But on the picture it looks like you only have sand as substrate.

I highly recommend to use a mix of sand and soil (about 50/50) instead. This will allow the bearded dragons to dig. Only sand is pretty useless to dig in.

The large ones are actually pretty small, about the size of my pinky fingernail.

And I'm glad you said something about that. I didn't know anything about that, I was always told to just go with play sand...That kind of soil would you recommend, and where would I get it? I just get my sand at home depot, strained play sand.

It's hard to get the right substrate for these little guys. :p Where they live the ground is very hard which is hard to copy in the terrarium. But sand/soil works pretty well for their needs.

I don't know what kind of soil you got in the states. But it should be something that doesn't have so much fertiliser and other stuff in it.

I use a special soil that is used for cactus. I'm sorry I can't help you out more.

It's cool, you've already helped quite a bit. I didn't even know to add soil until you said something. I'm sure Home Depot will have some soil that doesn't have fertilizer that will work well.

Hi please try to avoid sand it is not digestible and can kill your beardie. The only time they really dig is when a female is getting ready to lay eggs!! Also like they said before large crickets are way to big for them and can be very hard to digest. Make sure your basking side is about 110-115 and there cool side about 75. They also need to get within inches of their UVB light. Otherwise it is literally no good. Collard greens and other dark greens are great!! Keep it up. Also when you get a chance you might want to have them sexed. Or if you want you can do it your self. If you flip there tail at the fat part of their tale you will see either one lump or two small ones. If it is one that is a girl. If it is 2 that is a boy. Just fyi if they are a boy and girl be careful they will breed in about a year and it can be really hard on your girl. Your beardies have beautiful color good job in picking them out :)

Since this is up near the top I figure I'll give everyone an update. Got two new cages built for them, but haven't covered them yet, so they're just the color of the sealer.

They have grown like weeds it seems lol. Ganymede is just about a foot, and Callisto just took off and is between 15" and 16" now.

They have been off the sand for a while now. And IÃ?¢ââ??‰â??¢ve always heard to separate them. And the cages I made will go on top of my tegu enclosure a lot better when I build it.

Great job they look great!

Thanks

And by the way, their off crickets all together now. Their staple is dubia roaches. Sometimes they get Phoenix worms as a treat, and IÃ?¢ââ??‰â??¢m probably gonna get them some horn worms and some supers sometime here soon.
