I have issues. For the last ten years, ever since I saw them for the first time, I've wanted a blackthroat monitor. I know the eat a ton and I know the require a lot of space. I can do those things. It's just that if I do, it's probably all I can do herpwise for a long time. This thread is for all you good people to come in here and convince me of what a terrible idea it would be for me to buy an ionides monitor. I want all of the classic reasons. I'm ust afraid that with the new legislation on constricors, varanids can't be too far away. I worry that if I don't do it now, I may never get the chance. Thanks for all your help in advance.

I mean if your not moving and you can afford the care i would so get a black troat, thats what i want to get when i finally stop moving. I know this might seem backwards for some people but for me reptile keeping has always been quality, there was a short time when i was a breeder of geckos (leo, fat tails, pictues, aussie velvets... on and on) and after a few years i realized that i much rather have a tegu (a single animal) then these 120 geckos. I got him in college and its been great. So getting a black throat might limit the amount of reptiles for the furture but it could also be a blast to have.

As for worry about the python ban and it spreading to monitors i wouldnt worry as much. Monitors are not considered as big of a threat for many reasons. There not nearly as invasive, alot of the common speices can't survive here without help, also if a monitor attacks a person there is a very good chance of surviving in or if one gets lose its harder for it to get into a nieghbors house... just a few points, of course it hard to say what the non sciece people will do with this ban so who knows.

I would go for it, but do what your gut tells ya. Along as you have everything set up and ready for another long term commitment.

I agree with chelvis. I would much rather have a few high quality animals than 100 others. Quality over quantity in my opinion :-D .

I think I'm going to marinate on it for another 6 months. I'm building a big enclosure for my growing baby blue tegu next month. I'm also getting married in July. After that things will settle down for me and I'll be able to be more practical about it. I KNOW I'll still want one though. I have for a very long time. I've waited this long, what's six months?

I know what you guys are saying about quality animals and getting what your heart really wants. I planned to get a crested gecko colony for a few months. I looked all over the internet for ones I thought were appealing patternwise. I was all set with money and tanks. I just couldn't do it. It's not my thing. I love the big nasty ones way too much. Maybe I'll be lucky enough to come across someone with true uscb hatchies if I'm patient......
