I don't actually have a Tegu yet, I found this site just this morning while doing some Tegu research. I don't really plan on obtaining one until next year. I'm here to learn :)
I live in Colorado and my current little "Family" consists of:
1ea. 2 year old Rhino Iguana (Titus)
1 ea 2 year old (approx.) Chuckwalla (Magnus)
1 ea 1 year old Sulcata tortoise (Maximus)
1 ea 14 Mo. Old Russian tortoise (Trooper)
1 ea 1 year old Hermanns tortoise (Mudflap)
1 ea 3 Mo. Old Leopard tortoise (Tazer)
So I have some experience with reptiles, but have never had a Tegu and I'm leaning towards a Captive Born Columbian Black & White due to their 'usually' smaller size. So like I said, I'm here to learn and enjoy member's
advice, photos, set-ups, etc. :)
Thanks!

Hi welcome to Tegu talk:tegu:. I would Recommend a Argentina Tegu,They seem nicer than Colombian Tegus ( no offence to Colombian Tegu lovers). If you just want to watch your Tegu more than touch it Colombian Tegus would be good. If you get a Argentina Tegu you could get a female They don't get as big as the males.:)

Actually the Argentina is what I'd prefer, I was thinking more about size. How young can they be sexed? I'd prefer a hatchling or something under 3 or 4 months.
Thanks for the warm welcome! :)

You can make a sometimes tell when they are around 3 or 4 months ( that's about how old mine was when I got her). But 30 inches is about when you can accurately tell there gender.

Hi Nira- Not quite. Even when very young, with experience, they can be sexed looking at presence/absence of enlarged scales near vent. at less than one year males will have formed "BBs" associated with muscle control of hemipenes for mating and can be felt. At about 30" the sex becomes very obvious.

You can get sexable young ones less than one year old from Rodney at Tegusonly. Wild-caught. I have firsthand positive experience with him. Others can chime in on vendors they like. However, be very very careful. Plenty of unscrupulous vendors out there that sell sick or inbred tegus.
