:?: I see pics of tegus with harness/leashes on and I would like to do the same with my tegu but there is no chance in this world or the next that he/she will let me put one on.. i have tried several times and he/she knows how to move just right to avoid every angle I try is there a trick or a certain type of harness that works better? my tegu is very chill and totally comfortable with me so that isnt a problem ... any suggestions?

I use the small dog harness that walmart sells. I just get the tegu out and get them relaxed. then I just slip the harness on them and adjust as needed.

My 44" male is exceptionally hand tame and very comfortable being handled. But putting a harness on is never easy...

I've learned the best way is to hold the harness in front of him as he walks and place it so he steps into the foot holes... then I quickly pull it up in place and clasp the buckle.

It's not 'easy' and takes a few tries, but I can usually get it on within 10 minutes and it causes him little to no stress. This method is far easier and less stressful (for us both) than holding him and forcing him to allow the harness to be put on.

Once on and taken outdoors, he will walk on the leash just fine, but he surely doesn't 'follow my lead' when I give him a gentle tug. It seems his nature is to always resist being pulled in a direction. So I go with that. If I want him to go left, I tug him right and he turns left.

My experience with a harness/leash has been a bit mixed. I let him free roam otdoors off leash more often than on leash.

When my big guy decides to have an attitude and not want to be picked up (while outdoor free roaming) I've foudn the best solution is to drop a towel over him and pick him up in the towel keeping his head covered. This keeps him calmm and protects me from those darn claws.

You can make like a mask out of leather, the two big holes is for the front legs, the two smaller ones is for the cord. You need one of the locks they make for the cord, like the ones found on the strings on a jacket.
