Hello everybody! I'm Jeff and I just got my first tegu about a week ago. I was told he is 5 months old and is a chacoan giant...I have no idea if any of that is true, but that is what the guy told me at Repticon. I mainly have experience with large constrictors (burms, retics, boas, etc.) and this is my first large lizard. He is very moody and can be super nice one day and then tail whip if I come close to his cage the next! Hasn't tried to bite me yet though so I don't consider him aggressive at all. Anyway, I look forward to getting to know everyone on here, and any advice for a new tegu owner is greatly appreciated! He is in a 6'x3'x3' right now with an ambient temp of around 85, and a basking spot of around 95. Thanks guys!

The basking spot thermometer reads 95, but there is also a heating pad under the plexiglass on that side of the cage so I am not sure if that is going to make a difference in what the actual temp is or not. I am used to using flexwatt for everything so I am not sure about how hot those pads get. Not sure how much he weighs, but I will find out and post later...He seems pretty fat to me, but like I said, I don't really have experience to know!

Don't bother to get your basking temp up to 115, I never raised my gu's at that high of a temp. Most of my basking temps ranged between 101-106 and my tegus thrived for years. You have yourself a nice looking tegu.
