Well I personaly have never owned a fire skink, but here's what I do know. Lots of mulch is best...perferably something that holds humidity. With that try to keep the tank somewhat humid...say around 75%. I've heard of some people trying to feed fruits and other things. Some say they take it others say they don't. I know primarily though that they are insectivores. Make sure you have UVB and I've heard they are very shy so lots of plants and cover works really well. Make sure you have a large shallow water bowl, and that's basically all I know.

That is great advice Alex, they are easy to keep, just make sure the encloser does not get too hot or too dry. They will eat just about anything, insects, ground turkey, egg, and even a pinkie every now and then.

Thanks a lot! I seriously think in most ways this forum is better then the on on kingsnake.com. When someone asked about fire skinks, not even one person answered their post. So all in all, they are like blue tougued skinks? I was also wondering about how to breed them and if they are live bearers and how many young they have. Sorry about the persistant questions!

Ok...not sure on how to breed them, but yes they are live bearers and the young ate absolutely STUNNING! From what I do know about BTS's I would say yea they are a lot like them except more shy, a little cooler, and more humid. Hey questions gotta be answered somehow. lol

I can't help with the breeding info, except that it is necessary to keep the fire skinks separate any time otherwise. from what i can read, you'll need mother in tip-top shape and a nesting box at 85 degrees. the female lay somewhere from 5 to 9 eggs.

but i did own a fire skink for several years. he was kinda my "starter" reptile - like any other lizard, a basking and a uvb bulb are a MUST. generally 50w-75w in a 20 gallon tank. i ended up using a blue and red night light also.
many people suggest mulches, but i would sooner get organic soil - mainly because i had a problem with pet store bought mulch getting in my fire skink's eye and causing impaction that later killed him.
they can be aggressive if not handled daily. and they are incredibly fast - moving in a swimming-like motion (snake-like, using their back-legs for all of their power). if scared or provoked, they will either run or bite - their bite is PAINFUL.
overall, a terrific pet though.

Ah i miss my fire skink now! He or She hard to tell with skinks, was one of the best lizards i've ever owned. I had a 20 gallon set up with a low wattage basking bulb and for winter time added a uth (my room use to get really cold). I got it as a baby at a reptile show but my understanding is there are not alot of CB fire skinks on the market. As for food these guys are great eatters roachs, worms (mine loved earth worms) pinkies pretty much anything and it would go to town.

As for mulch or dirt, i used coconut husk chuncks and about 3" deep worht to make him feel more comfortable.

Sorry to necropost on this thread, but I came across a fire skink at a local pet store about a month ago and I thought it was adorable [its gone now]. Now I have some questions.

My baby Tegu went into hibernation, so in the mean time I need a new friend :-D

If I don't get a land crab then... I don't really know what else I would get quite yet. Fire skink is definitely an option, but so is a Mexican Black Kingsnake, an Ackie Monitor, or some type of legless lizard.

...Oh yeah, the actual question. From what I could gander keeping a fire skink seems pretty similar to keeping a Tegu only on a much smaller scale. Similar diet, similar humidity, temps, substrate, etc etc etc. One of the reasons I chose a Tegu in the first place was because its very inconvenient to provide live insects on a regular basis.... or at least it was before my roommates got leopard geckos. Can Fire Skinks take a more-or-less regular turkey diet like a tegu can? Or should turkey be more of a "once in a while" type of thing?
