I came up stairs today because I was home from school and he was sitting under the basking light, but his back legs were twitching? He is moving around fine I'm just wondering why his legs are twitching.

I got him on wednesday, He has a 4x2x3 cage with cypress mulch, a large water dish, and a climing rock/tree branch. The heat lamp is a 100 watt heat bulb, ive got a 150 watt ceramic heat emitter for night time. No UVB yet because I got him on wednesday, didnt have time to get a UVB bulb. I will be getting one tonight for him though because I am going back into town. what UVB bulb do you suggest? i heard a reptisun 5.0 would be fine. I fed him raw ground turkey last night with a couple of green grape

*EDIT*: He was on aspen the first night I had him because the cypress was still thawing in my basement. This is the cage he came with also. Screen top, made out of plywood and 2x4's with a glass front.

Repti sun is fine just what ever bulb you get make sure it emits both UVA and UVB. Save money on one light instead of buying 2. Also with that size enclosure a 150 w would get the job done for basking and ambient temp wise through out the enclosure.

Are you putting any calcuim D3 supplements on its food? I don't know how the weather is where you are but if you can,.. try to get him some sun. Since he's new and not use to being handled or tame enough to free roam. You can use his feeding bin to get in some natural basking time.

When mine were that size and not use to handling, after feeding I placed their feeding bin in a sun spot in the house. So that half was shade and they could bask and get some natural rays on the other side. Nothing beats having them outside directly in the sun but it's the second best thing.

For me,.. as long as the sun is out and I'm at home,..lights are the last resort. When they fail for what ever reason, unless they break or go out, you don't notice until the tegu shows signs and or its too late. Which sometimes damage has already been done.

Thanks Bubblz, I live in wisconsin so right now its about 15 degrees F outside, and we just got about 2 feet of snow dumped on us. I'm going to pick up a reptisun 5.0 UVA/B bulb today from the pet store, and I also just gave him some more ground turkey with calcium without D3 mixed into it.
Thanks for all the quick replies.

Not a problem :-D , It's just something to keep in mind when the sun decides to show up, and until things warm up enough.

Besides the sun is more intense and seems a lot brighter after it rains or snows. Clear skies and most of the smog is gone,.. just makes it even better and more beneficial for them.

I was reading a couple of other threads about tegu's shaking, and most of the answers were stress related, do you think that could be the problem? I have only had him/her for 2 days, and even though i know I should have let him/her settle in, I took her out to handle her for a little while.

That could be but even then it wouldn't take them that long to calm down and settle in once back in the cage.

Did you have any contact with him that day? You said that you were home from school and went up stairs to check on him. I took that as meaning you checked on him after you got home from school. Which would mean that there was no contact or handling what so ever for at least 6 or 7 hours.

I'm a tegu novice and I think i scared him this morning, I couldnt find him anywhere and I was worried sick, so i dug through the cypress to find him buried underneath the cypress on the bottom of the cage, I think that might have freaked him out, I have learned though, DON'T dig for them, because they get royally pissed off.
