I have noticed with my tegu Akeno he always burrows at night and doesnt stay out (because I have no hides for him at the moment, except for the malaysian driftwood) and I was wondering is it okay to just let him have his burrow as his hide, or do I need true hides even thought he just burrows at night.

I would offer hides just to prevent stress. You want to make him as comfortable as possible.

If the substrate is deep enough I would say you are fine but as he grows he will need either more substrate or an actual hide.

Okay well the substrate is definatley high enough for now (probably 4.5 inches) but I will end up probably getting him a true hide when he is older.

Yea I would just try to get a hide if you can. You can just use a plastic container or kitty litter pan flipped upside-down. But when I had my tegu in her 40B and was building her 8x4 I took everything out except for the basking spot because she was too big for anything else to go with her. Anyway I had about 5-6" of eco-earth in there and she was perfectly contempt burrowing in the substrate at night.
