i got him a few days ago and sometimes hes out ( rarely) and half the time he is hiding underneath the cypress mulch and sleeping he east when i can find him and take him out. but if indeed he is hybernating what do i do? please reply with tips thanks
Since you just got him, he can be scared. It is normal for your tegu to hide when you first get him. Just let him be for a week or so then slowly start to handle him.
I have a Argentine B@W that I have only had for 2 weeks. By the time I got home it was late enough that she just went to sleep. I turned the lights on the next morning and she got up and acted fairly normal. When I fed her that 1st day she acted like she had not eaten for some time, (7) 5-9 day old mice and 9 medium crickets. she ate the 1st 3 mice BAM! so I gave her 5 crickets and BAM! gone, then 4 mice, then she slowed down and finished the last 4 crickets. Holy Crapballs Batman! She was very easy to handle through all of this I might add.
The next day (thought I might need a bank loan to feed this little girl) she ate about half that and the 3rd day nothing, she was burying herself in substraight and just sleeping. She comes out about 8-8:30 am plays around, I can get her out, feed her, bathe her and yesterday I let her roam around the house a little and she usually goes down about 3:30 for the rest of the day, as she is right now. Lights Out.
I let her decide what she is going to do, I am fortunate to have a very good friend that has "Varn Yard" Tegues and can keep me informed as to what is going on with mine. I think yours is just fine, I would advise patients with yours and just let be. Nothing to worry about, in other words.
I know, I know....patients my A@%s!!! I want to interact with mine! Oh well
My advise is:
If they aren't out to play with you in just five minutes.........JUST WAIT LONGER!
Provide your Tegu the best care possible and enjoy what it offers in return...
If yours was farm bred/born in South America then it's winter will be our summer (seasons flip on opposite sides of the equator).
Mine went into a full hibernation for 5 months it's first winter. It was hard to let him sleep that long but I did. His second winter his activity was very low but was only "in hibernation" for about 4~6 weeks.
I'm a fan of "replicating nature", meaning making my best attempts to replicate fluctuations in heat and humidity over the course of the day as well as recreating the impressions of seasons...
