How long do I have

My GU is 22'' long and growing..... he is in a 50 gallon tank which he seems content with for now

I am in the process of building a 8x4x4 cage for him actually just started today but am making great progress (just finished the frame) I just don't want to rush it

how long would you guys say I have before its a necessity to get him in a new cage. or just how large you would approve a tegu to be in a 50gallon

Also about how big will it need to be for me to tell if it is a girl or a boy

If im right a 50 gallon is 36x18x18 right, well at 22 icnh's I think that's getting kinda small. My new tegu is about 20 inch's or so and is in a 180 gallon custom made cage. It's demension's are 48x24x36 with basicaly 2 feet after i have subtrate in it. It may work for a little bit but I think you should hurry up and get that cage going.

well if it is a young adult, you should be able to tell. if i is a male it will have big puffy cheeks. and if it is a female it will have a more narrow head.and my cage is exactly 8ft long and 2ft wide.it is good for him. i would say about 3 to 5 months before you should switch cages. at about 2-3 feet i would change cages. so i hope this helps.

When you get a chance, update your profile to include your location. If your tegu goes into hibernation you have plenty of time to get the new cage built. If it doesn't you are probably still good with the 50g for at least a few more months.

If im right a 50 gallon is 36x18x18 right,

36x18 is a 40 gal. breeder. 48x 12 is a 55 gal tank which I think is still too small.But take your time and build the cage the way you want it and so it can best serve your tegu. most tegus will be slowing down if not hybernating now, so it shouldnt be as active until next year anyway.
