I'm ashamed for asking an obvious question, but...

I can't find the answer to this by searching.
Of course, I didn't search very hard, and I apologize for that.

.....Anyway, I just have a few basic questions.

1. When is Varnyard going to have Arg B&W '10 hatchlings available (or are they already available)? The main website hasn't been updated in a while. I find it much more rewarding to raise an animal up from its infancy. I'd like a little green-headed baby :-D

2. Do Tegus tailwhip? I know iguanas and monitors do. From what little I've seen though, a pissed off tegu is more likely to lunge or sprint than whip. Are they even capable of using their tails like that?

The rest of the questions are just my curiosity and have no real importance whatsoever.
3. Can Tegus run and breath at the same time? I know monitors have that throat-bellow which can pump air into and out of their lungs while moving. This also leads to another question, can tegus chase and run down smaller animals like squirrels and rabbits?

4. How do Arg tegus generally react towards the presence of other animals? If/When I get a big tegu I'd like to take it outside on a leash once in a while. I'd rather it not get into a fight with someone's yappy little ****-dog like a pomeranian or a poodle.
Well... actually it would be rather amusing watching a big lizard cram a little chihuahua down its throat, but I'd probably be on the wrong end of a legal battle and I may very well get tegus banned from my state.

5. This question has no relevance to tegus whatsoever, but it has been bothering me for a long time.
What is the scientific definition for a skink? Most skinks have no neck, are slender, shiny, and have tiny legs. The five-lined skink seems like the arch-stereotypical skink species to me. But Blue-tongue skinks and red-eye crocodile skinks apparently are skinks according to science. Those IMO look nothing like skinks. In fact, Tegus look more like skinks than some of the actual skinks do.
.... are Tegus nothing more than really big, carnivorous skinks?

Yeah, those were a lot of really pointless questions.
Thank you all for your time.

whoops, another question (sorry)...

How fast does a tegu grow on average (assuming it hibernates, I live in a cold climate zone so I probably won't be able to avoid it).
If I got a hatchling this year, how long will it take before it's a big, beefy adult?
How big after the 1st, 2nd year blah blah blah. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: Nevermind, I actually found an answer to this question myself!

well to answer question number 1 the hatchling are usually availible around june-july.2 yes they can tail whip although none of mine have.3 no idea 4. it all depends on the tegu, my tegu nero will tolerate my dog around her if she is full but if she is hungry there is no chance lol she will go after him and he is a 75lb. pit bull. she seems to think that puppys are food, she threw a big hissy fit when i had her outside last week on my shoulder and my neighbor had his litter of puppies out, she was fighting to get too them. but most reptiles that are larger in size she can be around with no problem!5 no idea. 6. just because you live in a cold zone dosnt mean your tegu will hibernate, i live in chicago, il. and it gets very cold here in the winter and my tegu nero didnt hibernate didnt slow down on eating either and now at 9 mo. is huge. before she dropped a portion of her tail about a month ago she measured 46" stl. so they can grow at an amazing seed with proper food, heat, lights, humidity, and space to grow!

E-mail Bobby Hill (Varnyard) to pre-order your Tegu so you can call dibs on the gender and type you would like, so the earlier the better. My Female High White B&W Argentine hatched last year on June 21st. He was generous enough to hold her until I got back from a 10 day trip before sending her. I received her around July 18th I believe. You put down half your payment to reserve your Gu, then pay other half later after hatching. So to answer your Q, they mostly hatch June and into July and I believe he holds them for 2 weeks before shipment.

To answer your Q#2, mine has tail whipped very often. She doesn't like to be disturbed in the morning before she has heated up her body so if I try to reach for her, she'll whip her body and tail... So PowerSun turns on at 9am, she'd rather be alone til 11am, which is when I usually take her out to feed her and give her a bath (if she makes a mess). Also she has bitten too but not in an aggressive manner. More of an instinct for mistaken food. And sometimes lately she's been acting like a toddler and has playfully been chewing on things or trying to take the buttons off my jeans. She's even stolen my #2 pencil right out of my hands, on more than one occasion (probably because I use it when studying to push her away from chewing on my books :)

Answer to Q#6. You can't assume the growth rate for your Tegu. Mine is 10 months old and about 19 inches. She hibernated for 5 months. Grew slowly before hibernation. Has been out of hibernation for about 1.5 months now and has grown 5 inches. She eats daily and eats til she decides to stop (plenty of food offered). Others Tegus are full grown and about the same age. It varies but can obviously be VERY FAST and very soon, or be a late bloomer like I say mine is in comparison.

Cheers,
-BLAIR
