Hey guys I am new to this forum! I don't own a tegu even though I would love to own one! I have been reading about them for a year or so! They are amazing! I am 13 years old and have been in the reptile hobby for about 5 years now and I love it! I would love to have a tegu but my parents dont like big animals for some reason and every time I ask my mom why she doesn't answer. So I would just like for you guys to give me some pros and cons about tegus. I mostly love argentine b&w and red tegus!!! Thanks in advance

Well first off, they are time consuming and expensive. You have to have enough room in the house for the enclosure. Usually people build there own 6-8 ft enclosures. They do live a long time. They live around 15 years. Are your parents going to take care of the tegu while you are in college and getting settled in to your adult life? I am sure that these are concerns that they have. So I would discuss these topics with them. Maybe they will realize that you are serious and understand the responsibility.
On to the good stuff. ... They are great! My girl it's pretty friendly. Took some work to get her where she is but I was lucky to start of with, she was already a yearling and not a nipper. I can walk mine on a leash. I can show her if to people who are interested. And if company comes who does not like reptiles she just stays in her cage, quietly. Not like my dogs who go crazy if not able to see company. They are much cleaner than dogs in my opinion. I think if you have the time, space, money and parents willing to help you that it would be a great pet! Keep us updated!

Oh and if your mom likes to dress up animals. ...... They can be dressed up! [emoji39]

In as far as having to leave one behind while you go to college, if your parents arent into it, its a lot of responsibility for them. The cost, the cleaning, the feeding and so on. He should have time out each day if possible. Unless they know what they are getting into and are wanting for it to in essence be their pet too, it's not a good idea at all. I had parents that loved exotic animals. I was able to get a ferret (which takes far more time and energy) my Junior year because mom wanted one too anyway. So when i left she was all too happy to take over. But my mom was super unusual.
