Hey everyone my name is Jake and I am from El Cajon. I have been looking into getting a large lizard for about 6 months now. I have researched a ton online about iguanas, monitors, and I just started learning about the Tegu, specifically the argentine black and white. I want a lizard I can have a bond with, and I don't have to be too worried about it lashing out at me once i've spent adequate time bonding with it. I havent seen anything about breeding season with tegu's, whether they go through that like iguanas do. I'm planning on getting a tegu around March of this year or a little later, however I'm not sure where I would get one besides a reptile show (theres one in my area in June or July). I don't really believe in buying an animal online, but I can be persuaded with enough evidence that it's safe and I can see the animal before I buy it. Other than that, my hobbies include bodybuilding and getting through college!

I am also quite new to the active Tegu world. I am having a 2 year old black and white argentinian Tegu since a week now and I can only say that the time with him is overwhelming! It's putting a lot on top of my life's quality! I think when considering reptiles as a new pet, the Tegu, especially the argentinian one, is just the very best to form a close bomd with. Of course it takes a lot of patience but it is so much quality time in seeing your Tegus and yours relationship increasing everyday. I so much fell in love with this animals and already can't imagine living a life withou this great animals!

When it comes to shipping such animals I also can't imagine that it is very cool for the guys and gals being shipped in a small paper box. But there are others here with way more relationship. Let's see what they have to say about that topic. I am just sure that, if the possibility is there, picking the animal up yourself definitly is the best for them and in the end also you!

Picking your gu yourself is best I can't deny that, but if you purchase from a reputable dealer in warm weather it is very reliable and your tegu will be coming from good stock most likely. I purchased my tegu from a breeder in florida and live in missouri. He arrived healthy and inquisitive from the moment I opened the box. I had traded several emails with him over a couple days but the actual shipping took less than 24 hours. I'm not saying to not purchase in person , just don't let shipping dissuade you.

Shipping is very reliable these days, a few years ago it might have been a bit more dangerous. Like N8bub said, pickup is a great option but as long as the weather where you live and where the tegu is shipped from (and everywhere in between) is stable, not too hot or cold, then you should not have any problems.
