Kind of a sad story.....

Well, this is kind of a sad story, but I am trying to write a happy ending.

A few days ago I bought a Nile Monitor hatchling online and had it shipped to my house. It took him a week to send it, that is not a big deal, I know that some places have set days a week, or month that they ship in bulk all at once.

Anyhow, I get the little Nile in a couple of days ago, and it is not the Nile's from the pictures. I would be shocked if this little guy is more then 10 days old. I get him out of his shipping bag and he is skin and bones, to weak to walk much and cant even bit a small cricket hard enough to kill it. He tries to but does not have the strength.
The first thing he did was walk over to his water bowl and drink for 4 or 5 minutes.
He was basically to weak to even chew small mixed foods or swallow the tiniest crickets or 1 day old pinky mice I have.

So.... I mixed up a Cal, Vit and protein/water diet into a paste and put it into a syringe and started feeding him with it 2-3 mg at a time twice a day. I have been doing this for a few days and he is really starting to come around.

He is starting to mouth display and run away from me. Something I would rather see then him to weak to do either. He also took 2 small pieces of Salmon on his own today. After inspecting it for about 10 minutes, because he is just so young and under fed that I believe he just don't know what food is yet.

I also saw him today swimming around in his bowl and climbing a small bush in his cage.

It is sad what some of these people will send to you in the mail. :( But, I think my wife and I can get this little bugger back on track.

Sounds like a promising start as far as rehabing the little guy. Would be cool to see some before and after shots of the moniter and I hope he does well for you. It's pretty sad how these animals that require our care are taken and shipped as hatchlings at such a critical time in their life. I wouldn't be surprised if your syringe was the first feeding he got since pipping.

got it thanks..

Not a problem. I think it is our responsibility as good keepers to keep the community up to date on stuff like that.

The little Nile seemed to be going better today. Chased and ate about 7 crickets on his own. I also switched out his water for some pedialite. That seemed to help out nicely too.

He has been spending a lot of time sleeping. I don't mind, he needs his strength.

*Note* I dont know the sex of the Nile. I just say he generically. I need to give him a name. :-D
