Komodo dragon kills boy, 8, in Indonesia
First recorded deadly attack on human by giant lizards in 33 years...........

JAKARTA, Indonesia - A Komodo dragon attacked and killed an 8-year-old boy in eastern Indonesia, the first recorded deadly attack on a human by one of the giant lizards in 33 years, a national park spokesman said Monday.

The boy was mauled when he went to go to the bathroom behind a bush Saturday on Komodo island, Heru Rudiharto said.

I'm kind of surprised that this hasn't happened sooner, actually.

that's really unfortunate but I hope people keep it in perspective... too often people retaliate by killing off the species of animal responsible... I remember when Irwin died there were reports of slaughtered stingrays :( The poor boy's family.

don't get me wrong, the reaction by the Komodo is completely justified but if that were my son and I was right there. The Komodo would have to go. Otherwise fair game. Although, I believe all walks of life should be held equal in the aspects of that they all derserve life. In this situation alone I would opt for the human. After all we are all predators and its a dog eat dog world right? Plus I would eat him.

I wasn't suggesting that the boy's family shouldn't try to defend the boys if given the chance. Heck is something threatened my cat, it would have to go ha ha. I was more refering to people getting scared and going out of their way to kill the species afterwards.

This is a tragic incident, and I don't want to seem cold-hearted (my wife says I lack a heart altogether), but this is an _incident_. Whereas my "heart" goes out to the family, I share the concern that this _event_ will be taken out of context. Politicians, voters and newscasters have no time for math or reason.

To put this event in perspective, people are killed by crazed water buffalo every few years (last kill in 2005). Sharks and bears get a few humans each year.

In 2003, over 17,000 people (in the U.S.) died because they fell down, over 19,000 from accidental poisoning or overdose.

Short answer is that you're probably safer in Komodo national park than in your own living room, even if you avoid that deathtrap known as the "bathroom".

Loosing a family member is horrific no matter what the cause, thus my heart goes out to the family...

Being able to live side by side with such a formidable predator for 33 years without human casualty is impressive. It reflects a pretty healthy balance between our species and theirs...

I share the concerns of others, that those who suffer from a bleeding heart will see this as a "turn of events" as opposed to the simple mishap that it is. When you share a back yard with a potenitally deadly preditor, you've got to watch where you pee.
