I just got a baby gu from a reptile expo and the little bugger is destroying crickets like it is his job, I dont want to give him too many and over feed him! could i get a feeding chart on what to eat how often and how much?

Thanks in advance!

there isnt a chart, just feed him as much as he will eat each day, some tegus eat once a day but mines always eat multiple times each day! since they are growing very fast they need as much food as possible to support healthy growth!

Yes I agree with you REP! I got a young Tegu just a couple of weeks ago, first day she ate 7 pinkies and 9 crickets. I thought seriously going into day 2 that I may need a bank loan just to feed this little girl. Day 2 about half as much, day 3 nothing and now we have leveled off to just about everyday and a little more all the time, and she is growing like mad.
I believe the same of yours as I know of mine and that is they were simply way under fed and now the are gorging simply not knowing when thier next meal may come along.
Have patients, feed yours all it wants and be happy! :woot

Baby tegus will not over eat, trust me once you see the growth spurt they go through you'll understand where all that food goes to. Most petstores and reptile retailers keep their reptiles fed on a maintance diet. So when an new owner gets them they are very hungery and will eat like pigs for the first few days. Tegus direct from good breeders will make sure their tegus are always well fed.

Try using ground turkey with suplements added, crickets, mealworms or if big enough supper worms, choped chicken... at this age almost animal meat will be taken by these guys. Again you can not over feed a young tegu, they will stop eating when they are full. There's no chart on how much to feed, when to feed and what to feed for these guys as some tegus are different then others.

When your tegu gets to be about a year and a half and has slowed down growing then a schedual can be made to pervet obbesity.

Feed it, then feed it more. Try again in a couple of hours if you dont get a feeding response means its full, try again in a couple more hours eventually within time you will know when your tegu is hungry. mine eat 2-3 times a day full meals of tuna/egg/canned foods.

good luck n welcome to the club.

Here is Zilla's feeding schedule to give you a specfic idea: He gets 1/4 lb. of ground turkey every other day. I mix in with the ground turkey: Dandelions (not wild caught), Crushed, dried alfalfa, and Calcium supplements (very little). You can also mix in fruits

On normal days I give him 3-4 adult mice (when he's not eating the turkey. and in the coming week I will be incorporating roaches into his diet. (For protein).

Like these other people are saying, it's pretty much impossible to overfeed a growing tegu, provided you're offering a good varied diet with proper light/heat.. Here's a good food list if you need more ideas on what to feed your little GU.
