so, i was shipped a boa with mites and the vet told me i should treat all my reptiles with vegetable oil. i did this and of course my baby panther chameleon died a few days later. my vet said vegetable oil was safe :rant i am not impressed. i later found an article about the use of oils to treat mites and it said some owners report death after use. there goes 350 bucks down the drain.. yet i paid the vet 60 bucks for this useless information that killed my chameleon. ooohhh myyyyy
on a happier note... i now have an empty tank, so hopefully a blue tongue or another tegu will be in the picture soon!!!

I honestly feel sad for you in a way. All this shat going on to ya. Hang in there, things will get better. Maybe this was just a sign to get a new tegu. Good luck with everything.

I would deff go with another tegu, and on that note like you said, one thats not from a petstore just incase. Id 100% recommend waiting on Bobby's '09 hatchings, you cant find any better.

I just came across this today. I had 10 Rhampholeon nchisiensis and over 5 months lost them all. The females had arrived gravid and after laying eggs they dropped dead. Then at the 5 month period my others died :/. I dont know what I did wrong because they went from eating (fruitflies, roaches, and crickets) and being hydrated to dropping dead. I wont ever work with them again though because I failed miserably.
But yeah, as far as treating stuff with olive oil or vegetable oil, the oil that stays on the animal that is hard to remove (usually soft soap works though) from what I would guess would block the animal from absorbing moisture externally and perphaps affect their thermoregulation? Though, I will say I do use vegetable oil for mites, but only on geckos than come in with them or lizards. And this is because I can use a q-tip to drip the oil over the mites and then gently rinse them off and use the q-tip or cotton ball to apply the soft soap. Lizards/geckos the technique is awesome for... Snakes... it really doesnt do crap for.
One thing I cannot stress enough to people is that reptiles vets are usually self proclaimed and are absolute morons. Most reptile vets are like dentists that are plasitic surgeons. They will also mislead you and milk you for money or they are too afraid to say they dont know and will treat the animal with drugs too harsh for the reptiles system. Sorry to hear about your loss.
