Well I got my B&W yesterday hes 17mths old approx 2.5ft and lovely, hes got his huge viv in my dining room and just loves digging in it. He is currently in my cats scratching post sleeping.
He has eaten and drank and pooed today.
I have just a quick question when I picked him up he wa so friendly the guy could kiss him on the snout, brought him home and put him in his viv where he had a wonder around and then slept in the same postition all night. Today hes been out and went and hid behind hi viv for a while so I had to get him out to put him back to his house, Hes now been out for an hr where hes had a chick and a long drink. He seems a bit skitty, not whipping or anything just arching his back a bit when im stroking him. and deep breathing, and sortof looking at me out of the corner of his eye I understand its gonna take a while for him to relise im not a threat to him I just wanted to ask in everyone elses experience will he go back to his friendly self and should I pick him straight up, ?????
Thanks

Bascially all i want to know is should I leave him like u would do a baby tegu to get used to me before I handle him or should I just start to handle him he seems to want attention as he scratched at his viv to come out.

Also how do I put a pic of him on here??
Cheers

Hello. First off welcome and congts on your new tegu. I too have experienced the same thing. When I got both of my tegus there were over a yr old. my male that i have, i have only had him for about 2 mos now, and did the same thing as your is doing. Yes I let him get used to his new tank, but i also took him out EVERYDAY to feeding bin and free roam time. It will take them some time to get used to there new enclosures and to you. But with handleing them everyday he will know you arent a threat. What i did when i was done i would and still do give my tegus alittle treat. Mine love grapes.. Now 2 mos later he doesnt hiss or huff at me. he looks to get out everyday and be petted or bathed.. or his free roam time.. :app .

I don't see anything wrong with handling him as he's already a tame GU. You have to keep in mind he's in new surroundings and will get spooked more easily. It's the same when you take them outside for the first time with all the new sights and smells they can get spooked very easily and it's not much fun chasing a tegu that you've never seen run quite so fast. :-D
