Im suspecting my sav monitor has parasites.. he refuses to eat for the past week and hes always had a huge appetite. Most sav's need to be dewormed anyway dont they?? Has anyone dealt with internal parasites, if so what med's did your vet perscribe?
Thanks,
Leanne

You can just ask what other's have used for med's. If could have a different type of parasite. You coul try raiseing your basking temps. What are you cool end, hot end, and baskign temps.

The best thing you can due is book an appointment at the vet, take in some poop of its. Get a fecal sample done, and they can determine what parasite it has and get you the proper meds for him. Also make sure you keep him hydrated. Make sure he has lots of water and give him a daily bath.

Well, my vet was going to just prescribe something to take care of parasites in general, without bringing him in. Im pretty sure he prescribes the same type of medication for all parasites. There is no reptile vet where I live.
Also, hes not eating.. so I dont think he will be pooping anytime soon, which is why I was hoping there was a general medication to treat all parasites in general. The vet usually just gives me ivermectin

Your vet should not be treating or suggesting treatments for reptiles if he has no experience with reptiles. Ivermectin can be extremely toxic to reptiles and often can be lethal! The manufacturer does not recommend it's use for reptiles. It should NEVER be used with chelonians. I personally know a vet that treated 2 green iguanas for pinworms with injected ivermectin and after the second treatment both iguanas became temporarily blind. I know someone else that lost several bearded dragons after they were treated with ivermectin.

If your vet is not familiar with prescribing for reptiles he can learn in about 10 minutes of research online. Please don't treat with ivermectin.

I use Flagyl and Albon when my beardies have problems. You need a prescription and proper dosage, dosage is based on weight. Any vet should be able to provide them

thanks,
Ive done some research on the treatments as well as a course last year taught by a reptile vet from halifax which covered this topic. I will stay away from the ivermectin, however, its the drug my vet prescribes for mites/parasites.. and Im willing to bet they dont even have flagyl or albon on hand. There is no reptile vet in my province at all.. and it really SUCKS.
On a better note.. I covered all 4 sides of my sav's tank with aquarium background so he cant see out and hes doing much better.. he ate a little egg, a pinky and some ground turkey. I think he was just stressed in the new tank. I still may get the fecal done anyway.
