:bolt Hello tegugurl here! well i have a 1 yr old tegu that i have had for about 10 days or so. He is eating well, he seems to be comy in his enclosure. my question now is how offten should i be handleing him to help to get tame? I do try and handle him everyday, been trying to the shirt trick and i dont feed him in his enclosure. So i do take him from cage to feeding bin a couple times a day.. Everytime i handle him he seems to want to go on top of my head or shoulders. when i try and have him on the bed he runs off..am i doing something wrong or do i need to approch this a diff way cuz of his age? I am his second owner.. the first owner bought him for there 10 yr old son that got bored with him so they returned him to the reptile shop. so im thinking the tegu was never tamed that much..I dont grab him when i pull him out of his enclosure.. im affarid im doing something not right or forgetting something.. I spend all day reading and learning new things about them.. Anyone got any ideas for a sub adult tegu taming? :chin

Thank you, sarefina aka tegugurl

you will need to handle him every day. try to get him out and feed him and play with him as well as give him baths. if he was not handled much you will need to do some work. it could take a few months. but be patient. it will be worth it.

Thank you. I have been trying to handle him everyday.. ill put him in my sweater for awhile. he will roam the bed for a few mins before he trys and runs off.. But like i was saying i dont think he was handled very offened with his first owner and if he was im thinking he was grabed alot by the kid.. He still whips his tail about whe i try and take him out of his cage. but then he trys and climb on my head or shoulders.. its hard to get him relaxed. But i will not give up and will have the patience to keep it up everyday. :app

I understand that were supposed to handle them everyday but we are also not supposed to remove them from hiding. Now what if they are only out when we get home a couple of times a week. I feel like my relationship is suffering because I can't handle her as much.

I managed to change my tegus natural wake pattern, by only feeding him when I'm home. This way if he wants his food he has to be up when i get home. Most of the time he wakes up just as i walk into the room. We have roaming time and some head scratching time. The when he heads back to his cage its feeding time.

As for the older tegu not like being hold, alot of adult tegus don't like to be held and seem to perfer to be on peoples shoulders or heads.

Good luck and it'll just time for him to calm down a bit.
